Donnie McLurcan, a PhD student from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has just finished briefing us about nanotechnoloy and its potential in the future. By using my gold bracelet as an example, Donnie explains how the sturdy nature of gold changes when it is broken to small nano-size pieces. Hence, the application of nanotechnology in real world, is in fact, massive.

As a case in point, Donnie demonstrated how a simple application of nanotechnlogy to a neck-tie gives impacts to its functions. The coating of nano particles on the tie exert a lotus effect, where in response to a splash of coffee (or any other liquids), the water molecule just bounce off the tie and leave no marks at all. This principles is used nowadays in many research centres around the world to build bulletproof materials by using nano materials.

Pretty impressive, right?

Now, to the question of whether nanotechnology holds a potential benefit or threats to our future, I shall leave it to you readers to think about and decide, because I’m off to another session!

See ya!
