The Ivan Doherty Gallery will be open during the Live Futures 2020 Festival, with the Sustain Me exhibition.
Sustain me: contemporary design presents work by Australian and international designers whose design practice is creating and developing deeper understandings of sustainability.
As design moves away from its 20th century emphasis on style and function, and designers are increasingly working within complex systems where values of sustainability are tested and negotiated, Sustain me: contemporary design asks the question: What happens when ‘inspiration’ meets ‘application’?
The exhibition shows that designers are meeting this challenge creatively, and presents the stunning and widely various results. These range from furniture and jewellery made from post consumer waste, to the use of natural fibres and clay as renewable resources, and the development of design tools which facilitate research and workshops in sustainable design.
Sustain me: contemporary design is curated by Rod Bamford and Liz Williamson, who are Lecturer and Head of School, respectively, School of Design Studies, College of Fine Arts (COFA) UNSW .
The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with an essay by Katherine Moline, Senior Lecturer, School of Design Studies, College of Fine Arts (COFA), UNSW.

From 2.30 – 3pm, Rod Bamford will be speaking about the ”Sustain Me” Exhibition.
“Increasingly, designers find that they are working within complex systems where values of sustainability are tested and negotiated. The exhibition, ‘Sustain Me’ asks the question,” what happens when inspiration’meets application in this context ” ?. It explores a range of different ways designers are responding to the circumstances through the lenses of economy, culture and environment.”
