At LF2020 we love Sydney’s small bar revolution (thanks, Clover!) just as much as we love the ever-expanding selection of weekend growers markets. You know what else we love? The super-cute Burton Street middle ground: also known as The Commons.
The more food focused of Sydney’s new Burton St small bar clique (Pocket Bar, Shady Pines Saloon), The Commons has done for eating out what Earth Hour did for staying in. They’ve focused people’s attention on the importance of pointing a sustainable future first to the local and then someday, maybe, if we’re lucky, the global.
Before we jump into the future, perhaps we should get a little context courtesy of the past. The Commons, previously known as The Pond, was set up by Right Angle as a temporary pop-up bar to rejuvenate a run-down pocket of Sydney and promote Pure Blonde beer.
The Right Angle team gathered the community for a working bee, decked the space out in recycled and locally made furniture, clothed the waiters in organic wears and developed a menu based on seasonal, locally sourced produce. How’s that for co-creating the urban landscape?
The project was a roaring success. The Pond was a country manor in the middle of a metropolitan hub and when the three-month-temporary-status was up, the locals who had grown to love it worried what would become of the quaint bar.
Luckily, when the Pure Blonde sponsorship ceased, the bar was able to run on its own steam and was thereafter known as The Commons. There is now a much wider selection of beer, but pretty much everything else remains the same (food, staff, décor and vibe). And we’re not complaining.
The food is varied, rustic and oh-so-fresh, but the menu changes daily depending on available produce. All ingredients are sourced super close to Sydney so as to limit food miles and increase sustainability. Don’t worry, we’re sure whatever you find when you visit will be just as yummy as it is sustainable. We’ll see you there!
