Janine Cahill BA MCom CPA

is a Sydney-based innovation strategy and futures consultant with special expertise in developing experiential innovation leadership programs and working with deep forms of learning. She has worked in strategy, organisational change and leadership since 1988.

She also initiated environmental projects within a large bank in 1991, developing cost-benefit analyses of green projects, which made sustainability a business issue.

Her corporate Foresight and Innovation clients include nab and AMP, and she mentors a number of youth organisations. She also runs a monthly series of Foresight Innovation and Sustainability Hothouses (FISH@6) and launched a new experiential and incidental learning business, Future Journeys Games Lab in 2009.

She won an Australian national award for strategy in 1990 and has been involved in change management of technology, process and culture changes over many years, following an early career in consumer, commercial and corporate finance.

Janine has her own creative and innovation practices. Working in the innovation space where futures, business, technology, design, sustainability and art converge, Janine is collaborating globally on a number of projects for the purpose of deepening the experience of the future today.

She is a senior lecturer in the School of Design Studies at the College of Fine Arts, University of NSW. Selena is involved in coordinating Live Futures 2020: A world of convergence. “The Experience” is the drive behind the innovative projects developed by Lucy Wang (COFA, Design). Lucy has been designing and developing concepts for experiential installations and cultural events of the Sydney Darling Harbour calendar since 2009. Lucy has just recently returned from The Netherlands as a part of an exchange program, under the mentorship of the Droog and Red Dot Award winning Dutch designer Jan Melis. The practice of Lucy is highly focused on the ethos to test the limits of Design, providing an open mind for further explorations rather than a giving a definite solution, thus by operating as a series of experimentations in hope to induce new inventions. Meanwhile, her perception on the future of Design can be defined as an interdependent and cross-disciplinary practice in collaborations with science and engineering, in order to deliver a new age of creativity and innovation within the 21st century.

The vision of her practice draws a strong parallel to the concept of Live Futures 2020, and in 2009 as a part of the Nexus Collaboration, Lucy produced ‘Decipher Code 2020′ an experiential design installation that challenged the conventions of biomedical science into a learning and interactive experience. This year, Lucy has been appointed as the Artistic Director of the Live Futures 2020 Festival of the Sydney Design Week 2010.

Jana picJana Wunderlich

is a Sydney-based Event Manager with a passion to connect people and cultures through shared experiences which she brings to the events she organises both as a freelancer and as an employee.

Jana grew up in Germany where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, specialised in Hotel Management. Several years of international hospitality experience brought her to Sydney, Australia where her interest in the Event Industry led her to complete a Master of Management in Event Management.

While she was involved in large scale events such as World Youth Day, Sydney Festival and Breakfast on the Bridge, she thoroughly enjoys organising events for small organisations and having a real impact on community building and social capital.

Jana first became involved with Live Futures 2020 as an Intern in 2008 and then as Event Manager since 2009 because she believes that her contribution assists the connection between people which is just one step toward a co-creation of a positive future.

Tristan picTristan Ap

is a young emerging arts practitioner in Sydney, first starting out in early 2009 as a core staff member of the newly reinvented, Vibewire Youth Inc. organisation. Tristan continues to contribute to Vibewire part time as their Grants and Funding Coordinator, while also working as a Festival Coordinator for Live Futures 2020. He holds an Arts & Science Degree from the University of Sydney and is currently studying a Management in Arts Masters Degree at UTS.

In mid 2009 Tristan was selected to partake in the year long FAR Reaching Leadership program. This is a newly designed program which selects a handful of young leaders working in the not-for-profit sector in Sydney, and developing their skills as leaders, and ways to work effectively within their organisation, field and community. Tristan believes in seeing Sydney continue to grow culturally, especially within the Arts, and passionately believes in making cultural events more accessible and available to the wider community.

Hien picHien Nguyen

is a Marketing Intern for Live Futures 2020. She is in her final year at UTS studying Arts in Communication (Public Communications) majoring in advertising. She has worked for a marketing firm, advertising agency and in customer service before. Involved heavily in student life at university, she has joined societies such as VSA, TROUTS, Redcross (in conjunction with Ozharvest) and even been involved within the advertising team for the student run publication Vertigo.

She loves the concept of learning about the future today and seeing what can be done as a society, to promote positive change. She wants to play a role in garnering as much interest in this festival from the wider community, as information equals power.

erin bio picErin Moy

is a Sydney-based entertainment journalist. Having recently graduated with a BA in Philosophy, Erin shifted focus from the philosophical to the cultural to become the Around Town editor at Time Out Sydney. When not promoting herself in the third person for this “bio” section, Erin gets her writing kicks freelancing for Inthemix, Groupie and Groove (Berlin). Music, fashion, art, film, design…you name it, Erin will pen you a little somethin’ about it. Oh, and despite the doom and gloom of PHIL2621: 21st Century Philosophy, Erin was able to shake off her nihilistic tendencies and stay positive about the future.  As such, she’s excited to do her best in spreading the word on this groundbreaking festival.

Naomi picNaomi White

is a writing intern for Live Futures 2020. She is in the first semester of a Masters of Journalism at UTS. Before this she studied Fine Arts at the National Art School.

She was drawn to Live Futures 2020 by the great mix of industries and projects that will make up the festival. She likes that this is a festival that everyone can get involved in, from science to design (and everything in between), and that all projects are geared towards envisaging a positive future, and designing ways to make this happen.

This is her first internship and she is looking forward to working with the team, and is excited to see where these projects lead.

Ryan McLean

grew up in Auckland and Hamilton, New Zealand. He has also lived in Sydney, London with shorter stays in Davis and San Francisco. He started drawing and painting at age 5. Ryan had been writing stories, skateboarding and tying his shoelaces since age 7. He moved to Sydney at age 11 and stayed there until his 22nd year. After doing an art degree at the College of Fine Arts, specialising in Print Media, he relocated to London in order to explore Europe.

Ryan currently writes for the Live Futures 2020 festival while writing and researching his own projects, reading tons of books, and working at the docks. The future is grand according to Ryan, contrary to what Devo thinks, the potential for achievement as a species is endless. The digital and information revolutions are only in their infant stages—they can’t even tie their shoes yet—because we have started to think about the future already, advancements in technology, design, art and science will make our future truly exciting.

kate picKate Shore

is part of the Media Team for Live Futures 2020. She has just completed a Bachelor of Media at Macquarie University where she focused on writing and public relations. Now that she has finished her degree, she has been looking to get as much real life experience as she can before she decides on the direction she wants to take.

While originally starting her degree because she wanted to get into magazines, Kate’s interests have broadened. The interest in magazines is still there, but there’s also an interest in old-fashioned journalism, travel writing and public relations and just writing in general.

Kate became involved with Live Futures 2020 this year as an intern because she liked the ideas behind the festival. She wanted to be involved and write about fascinating topics and help co-create a better future.

Nick picNicholas Pond

Is in his third and final year of a Communications degree at UTS, where he has studied short and long form fiction, writing for screen, stage and radio, and occasionally dabbled with a bit of journalism. Prior to this he received a Certificate IV in Screen, where he wrote and directed a number of short films. He has been consumed by writing and story-telling for as long as he can remember, and is keen to continue developing his skills professionally.

As far as story-telling goes, of course, there’s no greater tale than that of our burgeoning footsteps into a better, brighter future. He was attracted to Live Futures 2020 by its bold and positive vision of this future; one we can all share, and share a part in creating together.

PPatricia_LFBIOPICatricia Stepien

Patricia is currently completing her Bachelor of Design at COFA UNSW, majoring in graphics and spatial design. She has a keen interest in design that is tactile, responsive and engaging. This has emerged significantly through both her major project and Honours proposal that looks at the individual’s detached relationship from public space and others. Through her Honours research, she aims to explore this notion of disengagement and withdrawal from public space, seeking to trace notions of re-engagement and it’s affects on public space and the individual.

Patricia has assisted in the branding of Live Futures, predominantly through producing print based collateral and promotional material for the festival in both 2009 and 2010. Her interest lies in the collaborative aspects of the festival and the opportunities it fosters.
